Our Mission

We build whole people, whole families, and whole communities, thereby transforming the culture of mission and ministry.

Family Empowerment Centers is at the forefront of creating pathways of opportunity for under-resourced individuals and families to experience greater joy and, therefore, greater hope in their future. We do this with a passionate desire to honor God and love our neighbor.

Our goals are to provide programming and safe opportunities for the at-risk youth and individuals in our neighborhood, teach adults to learn English, and provide families access to food resources- all while training the next generation of leaders.

Vision

Our vision is to build whole people, whole families, and whole communities, thereby transforming the culture of mission and ministry.

Demographics

Rogers Park is one of the 77 neighborhoods of Chicago. It is located on the north side of the city and is considered one of the most diverse communities in Chicago.

Rogers Park has a wide offering of local restaurants and businesses along the world famous Devon Avenue and is also the home of Loyola University. It is easily accessible through public transit via Chicago’s historic red line “El” train.

The needs of Rogers Park

Rogers Park was recently rated one of the best places to live in America, yet is a neighborhood with many needs.

We surveyed the people of Rogers Park to learn more about these needs. As a result of these surveys and conversations, we learned there are not enough youth and children’s activities in the community. We also learned that the services that are available are not marketed well enough for public awareness of their existence. Job training and ESL were two programs also suggested by those surveyed.

The public schools in Rogers Park are overcrowded, lack adequate supplies and parental participation is minimal. Although parenting classes are in demand,  the available social agencies vary in size and cannot meet the high demand of these parents. A lack of youth programs contributes to many students choosing alternate  paths in life (gangs, drugs, etc.)

The list of concerns of the local police include; drugs, gangs, youth and teen issues, prostitution, traffic, and community participation and involvement. Of these, Local C.A.P.S (Chicago Alternative Policing Strategy) committees determined that gang activity and drug dealing were the top two priorities of concern. As a result of these issues, many people feel unsafe while out late at night and uncomfortable walking alone in the community.

Albany Park is consistently ranked as one of the most diverse neighborhoods in Chicago. It has a long history of welcoming immigrants and blue-collar workers. With a thriving small business community, Albany Park is marked by its unique local restaurants and shops representing all the various cultures and journeys of its residents.

Albany Park Information

Albany Park is known for its welcoming spirit, yet is marked by gang activity and ongoing violence. As families attempt to make Chicago their home, their children need safe places to play, learn, and grow. Further, issues surrounding equitable housing options and community access to resources continue to affect many people within this community. Because many Albany Park residents speak English as a secondary language, the community can often be sidelined from engaging in the conversations surrounding community development.

Family Empowerment Centers is committed to being present with our neighbors in making Albany Park a great place to live and work. We are currently involved in individual surveys with neighbors surrounding what they love about Albany Park and how we can assist in ensuring the neighborhood retains its wonderful culture. If you would like to talk with someone from our staff about your ideas for the future of Albany Park, please email scottm@familyempower.org.
